10.04.06 | UMMC will increase the volume of investments in "Svyatogor" ecological projects in 2,3 times in 2006

the current year UMMC is going to invest 140 mln. roubles in ecological projects of OJSC "Svyatogor" (the enterprise of UMMC metallurgical complex) that exceeds the sum invested in 2005 in 2,3 times.

Particularly, the company will invest 113 mln. roubles in reconstruction of chemical and metallurgical complex of "Svyatogor", about 9 mln. roubles in updating the operating methods at the tailings storage of concentrating mill and about 6,5 mln. roubles in implementation of two secondary treatment plants at Severnyi copper-zinc deposit (a subdivision of OJSC "Svyatogor").

As Irina Bichukina, head of ecological department, puts it, the enterprise consistently realizes the program of reconstruction of chemical and metallurgical production starting from 2004. "Our principal aim is to increase the concentration of sulfur dioxide in roast and converter waste gases and the capacity of sulphuric acid plant in the volume of utilizable waste gases", Ms. Bichukina says.

It should be mentioned that in future the enterprise will be able to increase the volume of utilizable roast gases by 30% - up to 90 ths.c/m per hour, and the volume of converter gases - by 70% - up to 110 ths.c/m per hour.

During the current year "Svyatogor" will also commence construction of a contact reactors at the second division of sulphuric acid plant within the program of reconstruction of chemical and metallurgical production. "Svyatogor's" contractor "Penzakhimmash" has already started production of minor components for the new installation. Moreover, there will be conducted the reconstruction of recirculating water supply system at the first division of sulphuric acid plant and monohydrate absorbers.

The equipment for two secondary treatment plants produced by RSC "Ecostroiproject" (Perm) will be received by Severnyi copper-zinc deposit in April of the current year. It is expected that the new plants will be put into operation at the end of April.

To improve reliability and environmental safety, "Svyatogor" will continue construction work at tailings storage of the concentrating mill (the place for storing the wastes after ore mass processing). Among the foreground ecological projects of the enterprise there is a program on water resources which also includes saving of considerable amount of fresh industrial water.

The specialists of "Svyatogor" cooperate with International Academy of Science on Ecology, Human Safety and Nature (Ekaterinburg) for development of operating observation network of environment components. Moreover, in the next year the enterprise will continue the work on the regional program of rehabilitation and preventive measures against lead exposure of preschool children and expectant mothers and on program called "Springs".
